MLA citation FAQ

What is MLA 9th edition?

MLA 9th edition is the 2021 update to the Modern Language Association style. It keeps the 8th edition container system (where a source sits inside a larger work such as a journal or website) and adds more guidance and examples.

How do I cite a website in MLA?

Give the author, the page title in quotation marks, the site name in italics, the date in day-month-year form, and the URL. The generator above arranges these for you.

What does an MLA in-text citation look like?

It is the author and a page number with no comma, for example (Smith 41). If you name the author in your sentence, just put the page number in parentheses.

Is Works Cited the same as a bibliography?

Not quite. A Works Cited page lists only the sources you actually cited. A bibliography can also include background reading you did not cite. MLA uses Works Cited.
