What a Turnitin student account actually is
Turnitin’s own products FAQ answers the question in one sentence: student access to Turnitin’s products is typically provided through the educational institution or instructor, and students usually interact with Turnitin through their LMS or as directed by their course. The account is a container for class memberships. It has no checking feature of its own.
That is the difference between what Turnitin means by a student account and what most searches mean by it. Turnitin means a profile attached to a licensed school. The search usually means a login where you can upload your own paper and see the score, and that product does not exist.
The three ways a student gets in

The self-enrollment route is the one that produces the account most people picture. Turnitin’s student self-enrollment guide sets the rules: the instructor decides at class creation whether students can enroll themselves, the enrollment key is case-sensitive, it is valid for 14 days, and instructors are told not to post it on a public website. Can you open an account without a class?
You can create the profile, and that is where it ends. Turnitin has no student-facing upload box outside of an assignment, so a profile with no class shows an empty homepage. The credentials that fill it come only from an instructor: Turnitin states that its support team cannot provide a class ID or enrollment key under any circumstances. Buying your way around this is not an option either. What the “Turnitin accounts for sale” listings are
Search results for this question include marketplace listings selling Turnitin student or instructor accounts. Since Turnitin sells no individual product, every one of those listings is reselling access that belongs to an institution. In practice you get one of two things.
- A seat in a class the seller controls. You are enrolled with an enrollment key into a class run on some institution’s licence. The seller sees every paper you submit, the key can be regenerated at any time, and the institution can close the class the day it notices.
- A shared instructor login. One licensed account passed to many buyers. It breaks Turnitin’s terms, it is usually gone within weeks, and everyone who used it submitted into the same class.
The costly part is not losing the account. It is what happens if that class stores submissions: your paper becomes a permanent source in the student paper repository, and your genuine submission later matches it. What a student account can and cannot show you
Even a legitimate student account, inside a real class at your own school, has limits worth knowing before you go looking for one.
- Similarity Report: sometimes. Instructors choose whether students can view it and whether it appears immediately or after the due date. Many classes never show it at all.

- A second attempt: only if allowed. Resubmission is an assignment setting. Without it, your first upload is your final one, which is the opposite of what a self-check is for.
If you only wanted to see your own scores
Most people asking whether students can have a Turnitin account are not trying to join a class. They want to see their Similarity and AI scores before an instructor does, and a student account is the wrong tool for that even when you can get one. What happens if I join a class that is not mine to see my score?
Depending on that assignment’s settings, your paper can be stored in Turnitin’s student paper repository. When you later submit the real assignment for your own course, it can match that stored copy at a very high percentage against a source you cannot explain or remove.
