What Turnitin offers instead of a trial
Turnitin’s purchasing guide is written for institutional administrators and says so in its first line: subscriptions are designed for educational institutions, not for individual purchase. The route in is a registration form, a call from an account representative, and a quote sized to the institution. The products page offers a personalised demonstration on request. Nowhere on either page is there a trial you can start yourself.
| Who you are | What Turnitin offers | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Schools and universities | A demo and a quote from a sales representative, not a trial account. | Turnitin says a representative contacts you within 3 business days of the registration form. |
| Instructors | Access through their institution’s existing licence. | No instructor-level trial is offered on turnitin.com today. |
| Students | Access only through a class, an LMS assignment, or an instructor. | No student trial, no student subscription, no student purchase. |
| Individuals and researchers | iThenticate credits, bought per document. | The individual iThenticate packages cover similarity only, not AI writing detection. |
For students the wording is even more direct. Turnitin’s help centre answers “Can I purchase an individual Turnitin license?” with a flat no: it does not sell individual licences or single-use subscriptions. The alternative it names is iThenticate, which sells credits to individuals for similarity checking, and whose individual packages do not include AI writing detection. We break the numbers down in how much Turnitin costs. Whether a student can hold any Turnitin account at all is a separate question, answered in can students have a Turnitin account.
The one free trial Turnitin actually ran
If you have seen “60-day Turnitin free trial” quoted somewhere, it is real, but it was never for the checker. Turnitin’s Revision Assistant help page described a 60-day trial that came with one teacher account and 100 student accounts. Revision Assistant was a writing-feedback tool for classroom essays; it did not produce a Similarity Report or an AI writing score.
It is also over. The Revision Assistant release notes record that the trial programme was discontinued, that no new trial accounts were created after 1 July 2021, and that there was no timeline for bringing it back. So the 60-day figure that still circulates on trial-hunting pages describes a teacher tool that stopped offering trials five years ago.
Why the “start your Turnitin trial” pages are a trap
Search for a Turnitin trial and the first page is full of sites promising a 7-day or 60-day trial with a sign-up button. Look at the address bar: none of them is turnitin.com. Because Turnitin sells no individual product, whatever those pages hand you has to be one of three things.
- A seat in a class they control. You are enrolled into a stranger’s Turnitin class with an enrollment key. That key expires in 14 days and the class owner can see everything you submit. Our guide to class IDs and enrollment keys explains why these disappear so fast.
- A shared instructor login. One licensed account passed around dozens of buyers, against Turnitin’s terms, and gone the moment the institution notices.
- Not Turnitin at all. A different detector with Turnitin’s name on the landing page. The score you get has no relationship to what your instructor will see.
The expensive failure mode is the first one. If the class you were slotted into stores submissions, your paper goes into the student paper repository as a permanent source, and your real submission weeks later can match it at a very high percentage. Does Turnitin save your paper covers exactly which submissions get stored.
What you can genuinely try for free
There are three honest free options, and it helps to know what each one does and does not show you.
- A draft assignment at your own school. If your institution licenses Turnitin, an instructor can set up an assignment that lets you see your Similarity Report before the deadline. The AI writing score stays instructor-only. How to check your Turnitin score before submitting walks through asking for one.
- Draft Coach. Some schools license Turnitin’s add-on for Google Docs and Word, which gives you similarity and citation feedback while you write. It is institution-licensed too, so you either have it or you do not; see our Draft Coach guide.
- A free AI-writing estimate. Our free Turnitin AI checker runs your text through an independently validated detector and highlights the passages most likely to read as AI. It is an estimate, not Turnitin, and it says so on the page.
The closest thing to a trial that exists
What most people searching for a trial want is simple: to see the real Turnitin report on one paper, once, without committing to anything. Turnitin has no product for that. A single no-repository Turnitin check is the closest substitute: your paper is run through a licensed account, both the AI Writing Report and the Similarity Report come back, nothing is stored, and there is no subscription to cancel afterwards.
If you have never seen the two reports side by side, this redacted real report example shows what you get, and the price page lists what each option includes.
Frequently asked questions
Does Turnitin have a free trial for students?
No. Turnitin states that its similarity detection and grading services are sold exclusively at the institutional level, and that it does not offer subscriptions directly to individuals. A student cannot start a trial, buy a subscription, or open a personal account that checks papers. The only student route is a class at a school that already licenses Turnitin.
Can a teacher get a Turnitin free trial?
Not as an individual. Turnitin’s purchasing guide is written for institutional administrators: you register interest, a sales representative follows up within three business days, and pricing depends on the size of the institution. The products page offers a personalised demonstration rather than a self-serve trial. An instructor whose school already licenses Turnitin simply gets access through that licence.
Is there a Turnitin AI detector free trial?
No. Turnitin’s AI writing detection ships inside Feedback Studio, which is licensed to institutions only, and the AI report is shown to instructors rather than students. There is no separate AI-detector product to trial, and the individual iThenticate credit packages leave AI writing detection out entirely.
What is the 60-day Turnitin free trial people mention?
It was for Revision Assistant, a writing-feedback tool for teachers, not for the similarity or AI checker. Turnitin’s own help page described it as a 60-day trial with one teacher account and 100 student accounts. The Revision Assistant release notes state that the trial programme was discontinued and that no new trial accounts were created after 1 July 2021, with no timeline for bringing it back.
Are the “Turnitin 7-day trial” or “60-day trial” sign-up pages legitimate?
None of them are on turnitin.com. Pages offering a Turnitin trial by sign-up are third-party resellers, usually giving you a seat in a class they control or a shared instructor login. Turnitin sells no such thing, so whatever you get is either against Turnitin’s terms, liable to disappear without notice, or both. Some also store your paper in the student paper repository, which can flag your own later submission.
Can I use Turnitin for free at all?
Only through a school that pays for it. If your institution licenses Turnitin, your instructor can create a draft assignment that lets you see your Similarity Report before the final deadline, and some schools also license Draft Coach for Google Docs and Word. Neither shows students the AI writing score. Outside of a licensed school, there is no free Turnitin.
What is the cheapest way to see a real Turnitin report on my own paper?
A single no-repository check. There is no official trial, subscription, or single-report purchase from Turnitin itself, so a service that runs your paper through a licensed account and returns both reports is the closest thing to a trial that exists. SubmitSense charges $4.99 for one paper, with no subscription and no repository storage.
